Inappropriate Teaching Methods

I believe this teaching method is a bit inappropriate but not as much as it is reported on the news. I am pretty sure some people may be somewhat offended by this matter, but I believe it is not that serious. Whether in word problems, or other resources, the students are going to learn about this someday some way. There is no way to avoid the truth because it is our past, our history.
On top of that, cross teaching subjects is also an efficient method. Yes the examples may be a bit abhorrent, but since they were going to learn about it one day isn’t it a better way to learn the full story from their parents? Rather than learning the whole story from school, they can get a better understanding from their parents about these issues.
Therefore this particular teaching may be a bit hurtful but I believe shouldn’t have been such a big issue. I believe rather than looking so negative, why not look positively! Since they were going to learn about this in their future, we the parents can educate them about this issue rather than being accursed toward the teachers. What a greater opportunity for them to see the true insight than learning some false sides of the story. All in all, I believe this was a perfectly fine way of education.

  1. I somewhat agree on what you're saying, but there are so many more positive things to write a cross curricular activity about, so why choose slavery of all things?

  2. Eugene, you are not a parent. LOL. I do not think the issue was about the parents not teaching the child about slavery or any other events in history. The issue is with the insensitive way in which the information is being presented in the word problems. Cross-curricular teaching is a very good instructional method, but it should never become a method known for being offensive.
